Tolkien writes to Mrs. Brett-Smith offering sympathies on the recent death of her husband, H.F.B. Brett-Smith.
Notes
Tolkien proposed a letter of sympathy on 18 January 1951 at an English Faculty Library Committee meeting. Brett-Smith had died on 14 January. Tolkien reports at a meeting on 8 March that he has sent the letter. We do not have a more accurate dating for the letter at present.
