Tolkien discusses that Crickhollow was meant to resemble Crickhowell and he talks about Treebeard's conversation with Merry and Pippin. Tolkien mentions that the 'walking elms' seen in the Shire were Ents (but not Entwives) that Gandalf had asked 'to keep a watch on the Shire'.
