Tolkien submits a hand-written application and cover letter to join The Society of Authors.^{Tolkien had been invited more than five years previously, see Letter from Society of Authors to J.R.R. Tolkien • 7 March 1950 (#2749)[1]} He gives his full name, signature, occupation, and a hand written list of books published, periodicals that have published his submissions, and radio scripts that were performed.

The front of this form appeared in Sotheby's Catalogue of Valuable Autograph Letters, Literary Manuscripts and Historical Documents Including Sections of Continental and Music Manuscripts auction 29-30 June 1982 as Lot 414.
