TCG Letter #404 / Carpenter Letter #156

J.R.R. Tolkien
Father Robert Murray
4 November 1954
Tolkien addresses several topics related to The Lord of the Rings. Tolkien discusses the characters Smeagol and Gandalf (including the nature of the Istari), the mythology of the Valar, Númenor's downfall, and the concept of 'immortality' among Elves, Men, and Númenóreans. Tolkien concludes by explaining his choice of English names for mythical creatures and clarifying the nature of dwarves and wizards in his legendarium.
