Tolkien commenced this letter at midnight declaring that his love for Edith had not changed in the last three years since they were separated and that he was willing to marry her. Tolkien turned 21 years old on 3 January 1913, and was therefore free to again contact Edith, from whom he had been separated by his custodian Father Francis Xavier Morgan.See Letter from Edith Bratt to J.R.R.
