Tolkien was asked to write an obituary for the Royal Society's journal. He suggests Owen Barfield may be willing. Tolkien writes, saying that "I feel his loss so deeply that I have since his death refused to write or speak about him".

A quote from the letter was published in the article "Literary Greats Exposed as Gossips and Snipes" by Martin Bentham, published in the Sunday Telegraph, 7 February 1999.
