Miss Jane T. Sibley, a college student in Haddam, Connecticut, asked Tolkien why the runes used in The Hobbit and in The Lord of the Rings were not of the same set. The letter was first printed in an article by Jane T. Sibley in Niekas 38, 1989 (pp. 13, 67). A revised version of the material was published in Vinyar Tengwar 6 (July 1989): a photocopy reproduction of the letter is featured on the back, and commentaries and a transcription (by Sibley) are given on pages 7-8.
