Lyon Sprague de Camp, an American author of science fiction and fantasy books, had sent Tolkien a copy of Swords and Sorcery, an anthology of heroic fantasy he has edited, with stories by Paul Anderson, H. P. Lovecraft, Robert Howard, Henry Kuttner, Lord Dunsany, Clark Ashton Smith, C. L. Moore, and Fritz Leiber.
