This letter is dated 11 May 1965 and was originally a stock reply to her letter of appreciation. Tolkien discovers the letter on 4 October, and adds a note of apology which was handwritten. Tolkien explained that the letter was not posted due to "a change of secretary, and a heavy load of work suddenly imposed on me by U.S.A. 'pirates'".

Hammond and Scull published a description of the letter in The J.R.R. Tolkien Companion and Guide: Chronology. A photograph of the letter was reproduced in Dominic Winter Children's and Illustrated Books, Modern First Editions 2003.
