Tolkien, writing to Stanley Unwin, apologizes for sounding ungrateful to him. Unwin had sent Tolkien a much welcomed cheque. He hopes that the Hobbit earns it.

Tolkien also wrote to C.A. Furth on this day (see Letter #1333 (J.R.R. Tolkien to C.A. Furth • 17 September 1937)) requesting copies of The Hobbit.
