A letter clipping hand-signed by J.R.R. Tolkien, this is one of the “tip in” signatures he sent in correspondence with fans. As a professor he communicated by letter more often than he signed books, so when asked for an autograph by mail he would sign his reply letter a couple of extra times for fans to cut out and tip in to his books. This autograph is one of two cut from the same letter to a fan. Tolkien wrote that particular letter while at the Hotel Miramar in Bournemouth, England, where he frequently went on holiday, and the signature is on watermarked hotel paper. It is displayed in a hand-crafted holder, made from leather and artfully marbled casing. I bought it a decade ago from The Tolkien Bookshelf, the foremost online dealer in authentic Tolkien memorabilia.
