This is a 1st Edition, 3rd State copy of "The Hobbit" by J.R.R. Tolkien, published in the US in 1938 by Houghton Mifflin Co. This hardcover book features original illustrations by the author in color and in black and white.
(Please note that the book does NOT come with the original dust jacket.)
This is a 3rd State copy with the original maps and front/rear boards, but with a damaged spine and a stain through-out most of the bottom of text block. The notes provide additional details.
Notes:
- I have identified this book as a 3rd State based upon the information presented in the Wikipedia article “English-language editions of The Hobbit”. (And using Wayne Hammond’s 1993 “J.R.R. Tolkien: A Descriptive Bibliography”, this book would also be identified as a 2nd State).
- The binding overall is still together but loose.
- The book has the original front and rear boards, but the spine has significant damage with a large middle section of the cloth missing. There is soiling on the boards and rubbing along the board edges (see photos).
- The front/rear maps are intact with the front map in good shape, but staining on the rear.
- The text block is interestingly in good condition, but with a major stain through-out the pages at the bottom near the spine. There are numerous small tears (also through-out the text block) where the staining occurs (see photos).
Again this book does NOT include the original dust jacket, however it is sold with a facsimile jacket and a custom slip case.
I tried to take a sampling of photos to show the condition of the boards and text block. So please inspect the images closely.
Shipping within the US is via FedEx, insured, with signature required (no P.O. Box addresses). I will ship within 3 business days after payment. Returns not accepted.
Please send me a message if you need additional information.

A quick blurb about me: I have been collecting Tolkien for close to 50 years (some of you may even know me). Anyway, I amassed a large number of books (and other items) with many many duplicates. So, I finally decided to begin selling my extra copies.
(Please note that the book does NOT come with the original dust jacket.)
