Up for sale is a single page, typed/signed letter (dated 29 November 1963) by J.R.R. Tolkien to a Mrs. Gordon R. Naylor with an addressed/stamped envelope.

This letter was written to Naylor in response to a question regarding Tolkien’s selection of names in The Lord of the Rings. It appears Tolkien named a character that coincidentally was her maiden name. (The members of Tolkien Collector’s Guide did a bit of research and believe her maiden name was Hallas. And Hallas was the name of the thirteenth Ruling Steward of Gondor…see The Lord of the Rings, Appendix A, and search in TolkienGateway).

The letter is in good condition with two horizontal creases from the original folding. The envelope has some original damage from being opened and along the edges.

The letter and envelope are in a clear archival sheet protector.

Shipping is via FedEx, insured, with signature required. No P.O. Box addresses. Shipping will be within 3 business days. Returns not accepted.

Please send me a message if you need additional information.

A quick blurb about me: I have been collecting Tolkien for close to 50 years (some of you may even know me). Anyway, I amassed a large number of books (and other items) with many many duplicates. So, I finally decided to begin selling some of my collection.
