Up for sale is a single page, typed/signed letter (dated 15 November 1962) by J.R.R. Tolkien to a Miss P. M. Strain with an addressed/stamped envelope. Also included is a US 1954 first edition first printing of The Fellowship of the Ring (no dustjacket) published by Houghton Mifflin which was apparently owned by Strain (based upon the ownership inscription on the front pastedown). (I received the letter and book together and I am selling them together).
This letter was written to Strain in response to letters from her family. Notably, Tolkien replies on his appreciation of hearing from readers of his books and laments on his lack of time to write on “further histories” related to world of The Lord of the Rings. Tolkien’s signature is near the bottom. (And this letter is documented on the Tolkien Collector’s Guide site).
The letter is in good condition with two horizontal creases and one vertical crease from the original folding. The envelope has some original damage from being opened, but overall is also in good condition.
The book appears to be associated with Strain and is in good condition. There is some damage on the spine ends (and some darkening) and soiling on the boards. The binding is fair. The map is in good condition. The text block has no tears, marks or writing other than the front pastedown inscription from Strain.
The letter and envelope are in a clear archival sheet protector. The book has no dustjacket or slipcase.
Shipping is via FedEx, insured, with signature required. No P.O. Box addresses. Shipping will be within 3 business days. Returns not accepted.
Please send me a message if you need additional information.

A quick blurb about me: I have been collecting Tolkien for close to 50 years (some of you may even know me). Anyway, I amassed a large number of books (and other items) with many many duplicates. So, I finally decided to begin selling some of my collection.
