This is a 1st Edition, 3rd State copy of "The Hobbit" by J.R.R. Tolkien, published in the US in 1938 by Houghton Mifflin Co. This hardcover book features original illustrations by the author in color and in black and white.
(Please note that the book does NOT come with the original dust jacket.)
This is a nice 3rd State copy with the original front/rear boards and spine (with some cloth wear), a good binding, and very clean text block and maps. The notes provide additional details.
Notes:
- I have identified this book as a 3rd State based upon the information presented in the Wikipedia article “English-language editions of The Hobbit”. (And using Wayne Hammond’s 1993 “J.R.R. Tolkien: A Descriptive Bibliography”, this book would be identified as a 2nd State).
- The binding overall is good with a slightly loose signature around page 223 (see photos.)
- The book has the original front/rear boards and spine which are fairly clean with only a few marks. There is wear on the spine edges and on the corners of the front and rear boards. (See photos.)
- The front/rear maps are present and in good condition (see photos.)
- The text block is complete with no tears, wrinkling, foxing or marks/smudges. And other than a number ink stamp on the back of the rear free map page, there is no writing. Page 220 has been trimmed short as is typical with this State. (See photos.)
Again this book does NOT include the original dust jacket, however it is sold with a facsimile jacket and a custom slip case.
I tried to take a sampling of photos to show the condition of the boards and text block. So please inspect the images closely.
Shipping within the US is via FedEx, insured, with signature required (no P.O. Box addresses). I will ship within 3 business days after payment. Returns not accepted.
Please send me a message if you need additional information.

A quick blurb about me: I have been collecting Tolkien for close to 50 years (some of you may even know me). Anyway, I amassed a large number of books (and other items) with many many duplicates. So, I finally decided to begin selling my extra copies.
(Please note that the book does NOT come with the original dust jacket.)
