This is a 1st Edition, 1st State copy of "The Hobbit" by J.R.R. Tolkien, published in the US in 1938 by Houghton Mifflin Co. This hardcover book features original illustrations by the author in color and in black and white.
(Please note that the book does NOT come with the original dust jacket.)
This is a nice 1st State copy ex-library rebind with a decent text block, but no maps. The notes provide additional details.
Notes:
- I have identified this book as a 1st State (with the bowing Hobbit on the Title page) based upon the information presented in the Wikipedia article “English-language editions of The Hobbit”. (And using Wayne Hammond’s 1993 “J.R.R. Tolkien: A Descriptive Bibliography”, this book would also be identified as a 1st State).
- This is a library rebind probably dating near the 1938 publication date. The binding overall is sturdy, but throughout the book stitching can be observed when pages are opened (see photos.)
- The book has replaced front/rear boards and spine which are fairly clean with only minor soiling and a library mark on the spine. Note that the design and color of the cover and spine has been seen numerous times on different States. (See photos.)
- The front/rear maps are missing and presumably were discarded during the rebind process. The remnant of possibly a library sticker or pocket is on the inside front board. (See photos.)
- The text block is complete (no missing pages) with a few tears, some wrinkling, some staining, and numerous foxing (less foxing in the latter half of the book). There are no pages with any significant pieces of paper torn out or missing. All illustrations are present. There are two library perforation stamps on the Title page and page 51 and library date stamps on the Copyright page and Table of Contents. (See photos.)
Again this book does NOT include the original dust jacket, however it is sold with a custom slip case.
I tried to take a sampling of photos to show the condition of the boards and text block. So please inspect the images closely.
