This is a 1st Edition, 2nd State copy of "The Hobbit" by J.R.R. Tolkien, published in the US in 1938 by Houghton Mifflin Co. This hardcover book features original illustrations by the author in color and in black and white.
(Please note that the book does NOT come with the original dust jacket.)
This is an average condition true 2nd State ex-library rebind copy with a mostly unmarked text block, but no maps and numerous tears along the page edges. The notes provide additional details.
Notes:
- I have identified this book as a 2nd State based upon the information presented in the Wikipedia article “English-language editions of The Hobbit”. The 2nd State can be determined by the flautist emblem on the Title page and “Chapter VII Queer Lodgings” on page 118 erroneously labeled “Chapter VI Queer Lodgings”. (And using Wayne Hammond’s 1993 “J.R.R. Tolkien: A Descriptive Bibliography”, this book would also be identified as a 2nd State).
- This is a library rebind with a good, solid feel to the binding.
- The book has replaced front/rear boards and spine which are fairly clean with only minor soiling and a library mark on the spine. Note that the design and color of the cover is not typical of other known 1938 library rebinds. (See photos.)
- The front/rear maps are missing and presumably were discarded during the rebind process. The remnant of possibly a library sticker or pocket is on the inside rear board. (See photos.)
- The text block is complete (no missing pages) with minor wrinkling, some “dog-ear” folds, and some minor foxing on just a few pages. All illustrations are present. There are two library raised stamps on the Title and Table of Contents pages. However, the major issues are numerous pages (30-40) with top and bottom clean edge tears (except page 29 with a top right corner piece missing) and several pages that have tape. None of these flaws severely affect the text or images on those damaged pages. (See photos for the most noticeable issues.)
Again this book does NOT include the original dust jacket, however it is sold with a custom slip case.
I tried to take a sampling of photos to show the condition of the boards and text block. So please inspect the images closely.
