J. R. R. Tolkein The Hobbit or There and Back Again First Edition, Second Impression December 1937 George Allen & Unwin Ltd. 40 Museum Street, London The book is bound in the publisher's original green cloth covers with black titles and decoration in a facsimile jacket. The book displays squarely with some mild foxing occasionally throughout consistent with a book of this age. The first printing of The Hobbit was issued September 1937 with a print run of 1500 copies. The book was an immediate success and sold out in two months. My second impression was printed in December 1937. Only 1,877 copies were delivered because 423 were destroyed at the warehouse of the binder Key and Whiting during the Nazi bombing of London on November 7, 1940. This second impression was the first printing to include the author’s three color plates, initially commissioned for, and later published in, the American edition. The second impression became a collector's gem, much like the first and second printing, because of it’s scarcity.
