J. R. R. Tolkien - The Hobbit - 1937 UK second impression published by George Allen & Unwin Ltd Second impression, printed shortly after the first impression, with the addition of colour to four of the illustrated plates. Formerly the property of the "Special Rural School Andamooka Opal Field" in South Australia, with stamps to this effect to the front endpaper, the half-title, pg 111, pg 191 and the reverse of the rear endpaper, the latter which also bears the residue and remains of a label. Fortunately, it was evidently not a favourite in the school and is quite well preserved, miraculously retaining its original dust jacket. The book is reasonably firmly bound in green cloth lettered and illustrated in black, the corners and spine ends are slightly bumped and rubbed and there are a few minor marks to the cloth. Aside from the stamps already mentioned the text block is slightly toned and foxed with a neatly written name and date to the front pastedown and a short green felt pen mark to the front endpaper, there is minor cracking at a couple of points, the rear hinge is tender and there's some light staining to a few pages. The dust jacket is the original, correctly stating "second impression" to the bottom of the front flap, it is price clipped, slightly foxed and toned with minor loss and short closed tears to the edges. One of the 1877 copies of the second impression which avoided being destroyed in the blitz, and emigrated, leading an interesting life in an arid South Australian outback mining community, before making its way back to the U.K..
