The Devil's Coach-Horses J.R.R. Tolkien I have for sale one of my rarest Tolkien related items. I have never seen a copy on eBay or indeed anywhere else for public sale since I purchased it circa 25 years ago. This is a very rare offprint edition from 1925 and first featured in the 1925 Review of English Studies Volume 1 Number 3. Within is an essay in which Tolkien discusses eaueres, a word found in the 1922 Early English Text Society Edition of Hali Meidenhad. Tolkien suggests that rather than meaning boar, the word should be translated as draught horse. It has even been suggested to me that Tolkien may have referred to this essay when considering his 'Balrog' monster in the famous The Lord of the Rings trilogy. The item itself is a booklet printed by Sidgwick & Jackson Ltd. The very delicate pages and cover are bound with what looks like thin thread. Within there is some very minor foxing and a very fractional water mark along front/rear cover edges. Remarkably though there are no tears or any loss and no work has been done to it. When I purchased the item I was told it was brought new by the previous owner and then kept in a bank safe for 50 years ! I have no idea if this is true but for its age and make up I would describe the condition as fantastic. To have survived in this state is a miracle and I doubt is there is another copy as good anywhere. The book comes in a custom made outer cover which I commissioned especially. So overall an outstanding copy and one you will never see again for sure. A one off opportunity to buy an unbelievably rare Tolkien item. In terms of value it is very difficult to gauge as I have never seen one for sale but open to messages/offers. I have included special delivery postage within UK in the opening bid. Any overpaid international postage will be refunded once dispatched. Happy for collection of course. Please see my other Tolkien items. Any questions feel free to ask. Thanks
