Condition: Jacket in 2 pieces with some loss. Book spine sunned. Two owners' inscriptions. Generally good.
For sale is The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien published by Allen & Unwin in 1955. This is a 2nd edition, 7th impression in an 8th impression jacket. There is no reason to suppose one does not belong to the other as some 2nd edition copies did occasionally have different impression jackets. The book's boards have suffered sunning to the spine and edges but are still quite bright. There is a little lean but the text block is quite tight. The contents are free of marks apart from two owner's inscriptions on the second blank page after the front endpaper illustrating Thror's Map. The contents have the odd crease and signs of ageing but nothing significant. The edges are mostly clean with only a few marks. I would describe the condition of the book as better than good. The jacket is in 2 pieces separated at the spine which is where there is most loss. The jacket is contained in a film and paper envelope to avoid further damage and make it as attractive as possible. The photos highlight plus and minus points quite clearly. For all that, apart from the publisher's name, most of the information is intact but condition could only be described as good.An interesting example of an early printing published at around the same time as the first edition of The Lord of The Rings (1954-5). Postage will be Royal Mail special delivery.
