The Fellowship of the Ring
J.R.R. Tolkien
1956 -- London: Allen & Unwin
Today "The Lord of the Rings" is a household name. It has been experienced by billions worldwide, through books, movies/TV, videogames, or any combination. In 1956, when this 5th imprint of the 1st edition was published, the people who knew the story of Frodo, Sauron, and the Ring of Power numbered just in the thousands. No one knew then what a global force was slowly being unleashed. It's amazing to hold such an early copy.
This 5th imprint comes, oddly, with a later 14th imprint dustjacket from the early 1960s. Still 1st edition, designed by JRRT himself, and appropriate for the book, but appears to have been added at a later date, presumably after the original had been lost.
CONDITION
Book: VG+, Dustjacket: VG. The book is gorgeous. The red boards are brilliant, as is the gilding on the spine. Top fore-edge is still richly red-stained. Except for a dedication and the remnants of a plate with heavy erasing on the front blank flyleaf (see photo), the book is almost untouched. Pages are crisp, bright, clean. Map has slightest stress tear at its upper attachment point, easily repairable if you choose. Map itself is brilliantly bright & clear. Dustjacket is intact with just typical minor chipping to spine head & tail and slight sunning. A genuinely lovely book. Good Luck & Happy Bidding!
