J.R.R. Tolkien - The "Lord of the Rings" Trilogy: The Fellowship of the Ring. Published by George Allen and Unwin, July 1954. Second Impression December 1954. Red cloth bound hardback. No dust jacket. Condition very good. Spine sunned, and bumped, gilt lettering faded, some scratches and stains on front and back cover, page edges yellowed, Inscribed "John G Griffith, Jesus College, July 1955" on front pastedown. Binding firm but slightly canted. A little foxing to last page, where there is a small (<1cm) tear. Map at rear endpapers, with some yellow stains to reverse and small tears at one edge. Internal pages all very clean and bright. The Two Towers. Published by George Allen and Unwin, 1954. Second Impression 1955. Red cloth bound hardback. no dust jacket. Condition very good. Spine sunned, and bumped, gilt lettering faded, some scratches and stains on front and back cover, page edges yellowed. Inscribed on front free endpaper, "To J. G. Griffith from the Joint Committee of Greek and Roman Societies in grateful appreciation of his role as Local Secretary to the Oxford Classical Conference, August 4 to 11, 1955". Quite a lot of foxing to this page and rear free endpaper, but elsewhere all pages clean and bright. Binding firm but slightly canted. Map at rear endpapers, with a small 2cm tear at the glued edge. The Return of the King. Published by George Allen and Unwin, 1955, 1st edition, 1st impression. cloth bound hardback. No dust jacket. Condition very good. Spine sunned, and bumped, gilt lettering faded, some scratches and stains on front and back cover, page edges yellowed, Inscribed "John G Griffith, Jesus College, 1956" on front pastedown. Binding firm but slightly canted. Some foxing to front and rear endpapers, but all internal pages clean and bright. Map at rear endpapers has a small 3cm tear at the glued edge, and two dark stains at the edge of the paper (they look like the edge of bootprints). Someone has annotated "Helm's Deep" in pencil at the top. This is a lovely set of books, and a fantastic opportunity to get your hands on a complete set of these rare first editions.
