Condition: A very good plus book in a good plus dustjacket. The book looks little read and is complete and intact with a firm binding, gilt titles to real red cloth boards and a nice fold-out map and is NOT ex-library. It has the bookplate of a former owner on the front endpaper nicely dated to April 1956. It has a small faint lighter patch on the front board corresponding to a reddish patch on the rear of the dustjacket, demonstrating that the dustjacket is original to the book. The jacket has age toning, especially to its spine and some rubbing and wear to corners and folds. Please note that it previously had several tears along folds of the dustjacket that have been mended with flexible adhesive, such that the repairs are now hard to see. Firstly, the entire rear fold of the spine was previously split. Secondly the front fold of the spine and the fold between the front panel and the front flap were previously split from the base of the dustjacket to about halfway up the lengths of these folds.
A first edition and first printing of The Return of the King, the third climactic book in the Lord of the Rings trilogy published in 1955. But this one has the additional merit of being a scarce first state book. The printing history of the first impression of The Return of the King was complicated by an accidental slippage and subsequent sagging of some of the letters on the print block for page 49 about 10% of the way through the first print run. All subsequent copies of the first edition had the sagging text up to the last printing of the first edition (the type was eventually re-set for the second edition in 1966). Furthermore, a small signature 4 was added in the lower margin of page 49 about 20% of the way through the first print run. This created three states of the first edition: First State: No sagging of the text and no signature 4, first ~750 of the 1st impression Second State: Sagging but no signature 4, next 750 of the 1st impression Third State: Sagging text and signature 4, remaining 6000 copies of the 1st impression Please see the attached photo of page 49 in this book and a photo of the standard page 49 in another 1st impression copy beside it for comparison. Notice, for example, how the s in Legolas drops down in the third line up in the standard 1st impression. Hence it is possible to be sure that the book in this listing was among the first 750 copies printed of the first print run of 7500 copies.
