Condition: The book is very good and NOT ex-library with a touch of light foxing, a few small and inconspicuous marks and the usual faint patination where sunlight has projected a faint image of the white areas of the jacket spine onto the book spine. It is complete and intact with a firm binding. The dustjacket is about good and is not price-clipped and is original to this book. However, somebody previously “repaired” it by applying strips of Sellotape down the four folds on its printed side. All tape now removed, but still discolouration and some dry residue of the tape adhesive. Chips to the corners of the folds and to the top end of the spine. Several tears repaired by the application of strips of thin paper to the rear. A tear all the way down the fold between the front panel and the front flap has been repaired. Jacket states ninth impression whereas the book is tenth, but this is because it was common at Allen & Unwin to use up jackets left over from the previous printing in the 1950s.
Technically the second edition (because of some minor textual changes made by the publisher for the fifth printing), but still basically in the first edition format and printed before Tolkien’s hobbit books became hyper-famous and therefore a highly collectible copy. The glorious and magical dustjacket (inspired by the designs of William Morris for the Art & Crafts movement), the colour frontispiece, the eight black & white illustrations (mostly full page) and the fabulous two-colour endpaper maps of the Lonely Mountain and Mirkwood are all by the author himself. Even the green boards are decorated with Tolkien’s sketches of the dragon Smaug. Tolkien’s life has been portrayed in a movie a few years ago and the fame of the Lord of the Rings and Hobbit movies goes without saying. CONDITION: The book is very good and NOT ex-library with a touch of light foxing here and there, a few small and inconspicuous marks and the usual faint patination where sunlight has projected a faint image of the white areas of the jacket spine onto the book spine over the years. It is complete and intact with a firm binding. The dustjacket is about good and is not price-clipped and is original to this book. However, somebody previously “repaired” it by applying strips of Sellotape down the four folds on its printed side. Although all the tape is now removed, there is still discolouration and some dry residue of the tape adhesive. There are also chips to the corners of the folds and to the top end of the spine and several tears have been repaired by the application of strips of thin paper to the rear of the jacket. In particular a tear all the way down the fold between the front panel and the front flap has been repaired. The jacket states ninth impression whereas the book states tenth impression, but this is because it was common practice at Allen & Unwin to use up jackets left over from the previous printing during the 1950s. This practice is noted on websites dedicated to Tolkien’s books, so there is no problem in having a preceding printing’s jacket in this case. The dustjacket will be protected in removable cellophane when delivered. The book will be posted in bubblewrap and cardboard layers to preserve its condition.
