On offer here is an autograph note signed by J.R.R. Tolkien. It was written in 1952 when he was combining fiction writing with his 'day job' - Professor of English Language at Merton College Oxford. He writes to one of his students, Miss J.W.M. Moore of Queen Street, Lancaster: Dear Miss Moore, In the pressure of the times, I forgot to enter the date to which your Viva Voce was removed. I believe it was to the last day (July 30); but should be obliged if you wd. send me a card. (Whatever date I appointed in my letter may stand). Yours sincerely, J.R.R. Tolkien [Viva Voce: an oral examination for an academic qualification.] The note is written in ink in Tolkien's familiar handwriting on a cream-coloured Merton College correspondence card with a thin border of darker brown (probably the result of its previously having been framed). Miss Moore's address is written in Tolkien's hand on the reverse and, as was his custom, he has added his initials at the bottom. There's some marginal creasing at the top, smudging on one letter and general light handling wear. The signature is an excellent example. Provenance: Lot 202 in Bloomsbury Auctions' sale 'Literature & Manuscripts', London May 12 2011.
