Tree and Leaf by J.R.R. Tolkien *1964 UK First Edition / 1st Printing* - Published by George Allen & Unwin; Great Britain, UK - Hardcover with unclipped dust-jacket For sale is the 1964 UK First Edition/First Printing of Tree and Leaf by J.R.R. Tolkien. This first edition went through four or five printings before the dust-jacket design was altered in 1971. Included in this book is Tolkien’s essay On Fairy Stories. This was based on a lecture that Tolkien gave which was first published in the 1947 Essays Presented to Charles Williams, a collection of works by various writers in commemoration of Tolkien’s friend and co-inkling Charles Williams. In it, Tolkien defends the fairy tale (or sub-creation) and justifies it’s effectiveness and importance within the context of literature and life. It can clearly be seen as a precursor to his great work, The Lord of the Rings. This is followed by the short story Leaf by Niggle, which was first published in the ‘Dublin Review’ in 1945. It is a charming and engaging tale of an artist concerning his obsession with his craft and his love of detail. The story is often seen as an allegory of Tolkien’s own creative process and to some extent, his own life.
