The 1965 books you see above are in good condition as far as no torn or missing pages, clean and free of significant damage. The box itself, as the pictures indicate, has some splitting and some abrasion from what I assume was a sticker. The spines of the books have some discoloration and wrinkling. Book 1's pages feel more brittle than 2 or 3. Book 1's cover has some wrinkling. Book 1 is a Second Printing.Book 2 and 3 are First Printings All pages are yellowed. These were printed in 1965. Please read below: This Excerpt below describing this Authorized Edition is taken directly from the Tolkien Library Store - The Lord of the Rings, Paperback Book Boxset from 1965; 3 volumes in green slipcase. This is the very first Ballantine slipcase, showing a simple green box (and not the later Barbara Remmington illustration). Rare to find in any condition! This set includes: The Fellowship of the Ring, The Two Towers and The Return of the King. Ballantine Books hurriedly issued the first authorized paperback edition of The Lord of the Rings in the United States in 1965, in response to the illegally issued Ace Paperbacks edition. The covers stated "The Authorized Edition of the Famous Fantasy Trilogy." The foreword was extended to include a few words about purchasing this edition "and no other" as a "courtesy to living authors."
