Red cloth boards with visible age-related wear, including fading and staining, corners bumped but only slight fraying to corners and none to spine ends. Very slight foxing to endpapers, none elsewhere; one slight blemish on folding map .  Binding tight. Neat gift inscription/writing on the front endpaper "To Julia from Phillip". Please study photos carefully for full condition.  More pictures can be sent.  A scarce first edition collectible Allen & Unwin Tolkien hardback.  This second impression of the first edition had a modest print run of only 2500 and was entirely re-set from the first impression of which 3000 had been printed. This introduced a number of new errors to spellings in the text, which Tolkien had to later revise.
