NOCK, O. S. LMS Steam. Newton Abbott: David & Charles. 1971. 8vo. Publisher’s black cloth lettered in gilt to the spine, in the dust jacket. This copy from the library of Michael H. R. Tolkien, with his ownership signature to the front endpaper, ‘Stonyhurst. April 24th 1971 (soon to be a vast source of consolation when bed-ridden)”. A near fine copy, just gently bumped at corners and tips, the binding tight and square, the contents fine with only Michael’s inscription present, no stamps or foxing. The dust jacket price-clipped and a little crimped, slightly nicked and rubbed at spine head. Part of Michael’s extensive collection of railway books, which rarely come to market. Michael had an input in his father’s The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings—his Dutch doll, for instance, became an inspiration for Tom Bombadil. Stonyhurst was the college he taught Classics at until shortly after this, as indicated by his note here.
