This is a "good plus" to "very good -" green cloth wrapped vintage hardcover with two-color map tipped in the back, cloth head and tail band sewn into the binding, some internal maps, published circa 1977 by Houghton Mifflin of Boston, 365 pages including appendix. First American edition, 9th printing. Binding is crisp and intact, hinges are not split. Aside from a brief X-mas gift inscription on the front free end paper and a fantasy owners plate, no writing or marks. No loose, torn or folded pages. Text block closes tightly, has a damp stain on the top edge and is somewhat tanned. Outer edge shows a small damp stain at bottom edge. Green cloth wraps are sunned along most edges, corners are bumped, both front board corners worn through to underlying board. Gilt decoration on the front board is bright, lettering and design on the spine is fairly bright, a little worn perhaps. The original matching dust wrapper has a large loss at the tope of the spine. At some point someone lined the entire upper and lower edges of the jacket with scotch tape. Overall tanned all around, small loss at front cover lower corner at spine. Original price of $10.95 inside the front flap. Now protected in a removable archival sleeve. Map in the back is bright and crisp. No tanning or marks. Small, one inch tear to the center seam where attached to the book, otherwise pretty close to flawless. Not a perfect book, but these early printings, especially with a quality map still intact, are appreciating with each year - will still make a fine gift or addition to your Tolkien shelf. See accompanying images for full condition details. Middle earth fans will rejoice! Will ship promptly, carefully packaged and fully insured - FREE PRIORITY TO US!
