TOLKIEN, J. R. R. : THE HOBBIT Allen & Unwin Sixth Impression 1954 An incredibly early & very good copy of the Sixth Impression from 1954. It is complete with its original but chipped and well worn dustwrapper. "In a hole in ground there lived a hobbit, Not a nasty dirty, wet hole, filled with the ends of worms and an oozy smell, nor yet a dry, bare, sandy hole with nothing in it to sit down on or to eat; it was a hobbit hole, and that means comfort." And so started - one of the most famous books ever written. It met with instant critical acclaim when first published in 1937. It is a timeless classic and its plot includes the Hobbit - Bilbo Baggins, the Wizard, Gandalf, an invisible universally coveted invisible ring, a dangerous dragon and the spectacular Middle-earth. 8vo. Hardback. Original cloth boards & not the later paper covered boards. Uneven fading to spine & some wear to extremities. No chipping or splitting. Internally complete. Light watermark just affecting the top 2-3mm of first few leaves. No inscriptions. Some light spotting to edges. Map endpapers original and unsplit. The dustwrapper has chipping to head & tail and considerable archival tape to rear on splits on spine hinges. There are open tears along the spine hinge and some watermarking to verso (see pictures). Not price clipped with original price of 9s6dnet to front flap and the words "Sixth Printing" to the front flap. We are really selling the book and the dustwrapper is a thankful afterthought. The wrapper has been covered in loose clear cellophane for its preservation. An incredibly early impression of The Hobbit and indeed we can find no copies for sale at the time of writing. There is a fifth impression without dustwrapper for £3500 and a seventh impression in a wrapper for £2750 and a seventh impression with the spine hanging off without the wrapper for £900. Would make a superb present for a Tolkien lover. One ring to rule them allOne ring to find themOne ring to bring them all And in the darkness bind them
