Tolkien examined the Middle English word losenger because a ‘fresh scrutiny of its etymology may afford a glimpse (if no more) into the complexities of Germanic and Latin in Northern Gaul’. Tolkien's Contribution is in English while those of the other contributors are in French. See Hammond B20, page 302. Proceedings of a conference held in 1951.
