Fifty New Poems for Children an Anthology: D. Appleton and Company New York Publisher: D. Appleton and Company, New York Publication Date: 1924 Binding: Hard Cover Edition: 1st American Edition / 1st Impression Item Description: D. Appleton and Company, New York, 1924. Hard Cover. The collection includes 'Goblin Feet' by J. R. R. Tolkien (misspelled Tolkein several times). Dark blue boards with printed paper title label on spine, and title label laid onto front with woodcut by C. T. Nightingale of a pixie throwing apples down from a tree. CONDITION: The book appears unread. Neat presentation inscription to first blank page. Overall tight binding and text in excellent condition internally. No marks, underlining or torn pages. The dustwrapper has done an excellent job of protecting this book. The dustjacket is in 3 pieces but presents well in the removable Brodart protector. There is edgewear and loss at the folds and spine but you would be hard-pressed to find another example. This is the only one I have ever seen in 20 years of collecting Tolkien books. "Goblin Feet" was published in Oxford Poetry 1915 and subsequently reprinted in the anthology offered here. It represents Tolkien's first work published in book form. This book is not recorded in Hammond’s bibliography. This is the First American Edition of "Fifty New Poems for Children. A very rare dustjacket and a wonderful and prized find for the Tolkien enthusiast and collector. I have some other very scarce and collectible Tolkien books listed.
