Hard Cover. 1st Ed. 22 x 14 cm., 168 pp. Number of copies not known. Just under 300 copies were reserved for subscribers, presumably with further copies available for general sale. Includes foreword by J. R. R. Tolkien, pp. xiii-xviii’. Here Tolkien discusses the compilation of glossaries and the development of the English language in the north of England. Wove paper. Bound in wine red cloth over boards. Upper cover with a single rule frame in blind. Spine stamped in gilt. Wove endpapers. Top and fore-edge trimmed, bottom edge untrimmed. CONDITION. Very Good. Overall tight binding and text in good condition internally. No marks, underlining or torn pages. Housed in a removable Brodart protector. In his foreword Tolkien praises Haigh’s work and promotes dialect studies in general. He ‘firstbecame acquainted with the manuscript in 1923, when Mr. Haigh had already lavished endless time and care upon it; Tolkien’s only contribution since had been to urge him on, and to assure him of thevalue of his work…’ A wonderful and prized find for the Tolkien enthusiast and collector.
