Light wear at corner folds and edges, three small closed tears, creasing at bottom. Lightly toned, not price-clipped. A wonderful example of an exceptionally scarce dust jacket. I have never seen another one available for sale in the 20 years I have been collecting Tolkien books. Edition: FIRST EDITION / FIRST IMPRESSION Hammond: pp. 290-291 Item Description: OXFORD UNIVERSITY PRESS, 1929. Book Condition: FINE. FIRST ED. 21.4 X 13.8 cm. Hardback. Wove paper, bound in green cloth over boards. Four concentric single rule frames stamped on both upper and lower covers in blind. Stamped on spine in gilt. Wove end papers. No headbands. All edges trimmed and unstained. The Ancrene Wisse, an early Middle English guide for anchoresses, and the 13th-Century homily Hali Meiðhadattracted Tolkien’s study throughout his career. T. A. Shippey has called ‘Ancrene Wisse and Hali Meiðhad’ the‘most perfect’ of Tolkien’s academic writings. A magnificent copy of this very rare item.
