Leeds University Verse 1914-24In a custom made Clamshall Case with matching designsContains 3 poems by JRR Tolkien also EV Gordon and others. This booklet was published by The Swann Press in 1924 and features 3 poems by JRR TolkienAn evening in Tavrobel, The Lonely Isle and The Princess Ni. A poem by EV Gordon "A Ballard of Tristram" is also found among the other contributors. This booklet is in very good condition with no internal marks or inscriptions. No tears or loss, Please see photo's. The spine is good with no loss or chips, the binding is good with no loose pages and inside is a publishers notice. This is the best copy I have seen and I have only come across a few in over 30 years of dealing in rare Tolkien items. I have seen more copies of "Songs for the Philologists". This is extremely rare, not only having 3 very early poems by JRR Tolkien but also the publishers note. JRR Tolkien at age 28, in 1920 joined Leeds University as a Reader before being promoted to Professor, he left in 1925. He also worked with Eric Valentine Gordon (Canadian philologist who also taught at Leeds University) on "A Middle English Vocabulary" and "Sir Gawain and the Green Knight", as written by Tolkien, he "is my devoted friend". This is a very scarce booklet for the Tolkien collector and reading his early poems, and those of other contributors, you get a glimpse of the influences and creative mind that was forming the Silmarillion and Middle Earth legends.
