The Hobbit by JRR Tolkien 1st edition 1946, 4th printing. Hardback with original wrapper and presented in a wonderful leather slipcase This book is a stunning, rare 1st edition, with no inscriptions or internal writing, very clean pages and boards and the photo's show how original and clean this book is. It is housed in a custom made slip case in green leather which has protected the book and wrapper over the years. The wrapper also has a mylar wrapper protector. Accompanying this book there is a card photograph of the family which must be from around 1924, this shows Ronald and Edith Tolkien with Children John, Michael and Christopher. This photograph is on card with their names printed on reverse. I am not aware of any association of this book to the family and the photograph was found tucked inside the book, possibly a bookmark. This is charming and it must date from around the time the book was being written for his children by JRR Tolkien, the book was first released in 1937 and there were only 4 printings of the 1st edition as the text was then changed to fit with the Lord of The Rings. You can see some age toning to the edge of the original wrapper which is complete and I have attached detailed photographs of the wrapper, both sides and with the mylar cover removed. As there is no loss or chipping to the wrapper spine ends I assume there may of been some restoration although on close inspection it is not possible to tell. The book binding is tight and a few spots can be seen in the photographs. Any questions please contact me. See photos. Buy with confidence see 100% feedback. I may have this book listed elsewhere for sale and will remove from ebay if sold elsewhere. Free delivery (within a reasonable distance) free postage however insurance will have to be quoted separately, and collection possible. Please contact me for overseas postage or any other questions.
