First U.S. Editions of J. R. R. Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings trilogy. Published by Houghton Mifflin. Printed in the United States. Hardcovers. No jackets. All three maps are present. These are mid-1960s printings.
I have gone through each book carefully in assessing its condition. I am happy to provide additional information or photos.
The text block of each book is fairly loose in the casing (Fellowship and Return are worse than Two Towers), with weak joints, but the pastedowns and endpapers are sound, there are no hinge cracks, and the books can be safely read. Each book has a cocked spine, bashed corners, some shelf wear, and wear at the head and tail of the spine. Each has about 20 small spots of foxing or staining, but there is no writing or other evidence of previous owners. The boards have very light soiling and the gilt titles are slightly faded. Again, please see photos.
The Two Towers - Eleventh Printing (thus 1965 - 2,500 copies printed). 352 pages. Map is intact and pasted to final pastedown.
The Return of the King - Twelfth Printing (thus 1965 - 1,750 copies printed). 416 pages. The text block is quite loose within the case. Map is present but has been torn from the pastedown, and there is a tear in the map as well. There is a light drink circle on one page.
