First Edition, Later Impressions (8th, 6th & 5th) London: George Allen and Unwin, 1959. Three Volumes. First Edition; 8th, 6th and 5th printings. Near Fine in Near Fine dust jackets, un-clipped and with corresponding statements of impression; maps at rear intact. Musty odor to pages, tape ghosts and offsetting to endsheets, foxing to textblock edges an occasional spot of soiling to contents, light staining to bottom edge of Volume II. Cloth is bright and sharp, spine gilt lightly tarnished. Dust jackets are faintly spine-faded and lightly edge-worn, with some small tape repairs made to the verso. In publisher's soiled and worn slipcase. Even so, a very striking and early set of Tolkien's classic saga, rarely seen in such nice condition.
