It looks like HarperCollins only ships this item in the UK. I understand that they ship some Tolkien books worldwide, but not Tolkien-adjacent ones?

Harpercollins.co.uk only ship to UK addresses, apart from some limited editions.

I had an email today from HarperCollins with an update and have just ordered a new copy of the book.

For anyone who has been holding on for the reprint, the books have arrived in our warehouse, so we are now shipping UK copies with the missing pages restored.

Trotter, to be clear we have to buy a second copy ? they are not replacing the faulty ones ?

I have some further info on this from HarperCollins in response to the queries raised in this thread.

You will see when you get the reprint that to accommodate the extra pages - two that were missing and three brand new ones - we have had to rejig the new material at the back. We were also alerted by a TCG post to a duplicated box of text, but it was not until November, after the new books had been printed, so that minor error is still present and will be for the foreseeable.

If anyone who has bought a HarperCollins (UK) copy of the first hardback impression with the missing pages would like a replacement, and has run out of time to effect a return from the retailer they bought it from, if they email our UK Enquiries line with their address and a proof of purchase (photo or screenshot of their receipt), we will endeavour to replace it. Please note that it may not be possible to ship to all countries.

Hi Trotter.

Does this mean they will change the new print and identify them as 2nd print?

Yes, it will be marked as 2 on the copyright page.

For those of us outside the UK, I will consider going to my local science fiction / fantasy bookstore and seeing if they are willing to place a new order for the corrected, second printing.

After visiting Tolkien's desk, I popped into Waterstones on Piccadilly (rumoured to be the largest book store in Europe) and found that the (semi-) corrected edition is now in the supply chain, with "2" on the copyright page, the missing pages reinserted, and retaining the duplicated text box.

I emailed them on Monday about a replacement copy, and got an email in reply asking why i wanted a replacement. Phoned them this afternoon and a lovely helpful person called Dawn said she would sort it out and get a replacement copy sent out :)

A comparison of the first and second impression.

The overall number of pages appears to be the same in both impressions, but to incorporate the two missing pages from the novel, changes have been made at the back of the book, largely in terms of illustrations, they appear to all still be there, but some are on different pages and smaller, an example is a double page spread in the 1st impression, is now shown in the top half of one page.

The page numbers have been adjusted to add back the extra pages.

The double text box is still in the book, which hopefully will be corrected at some point, but it does not detract much from reading the book.

Thank you so much for the detailed update. Sad to see that some illustrations got cut in 1/4, but I understand that it was required to keep the same number of pages.
