I love Easton Press books in general and will buy any I can afford. But when it comes to their LOTR set I'm appalled and very disappointed. The covers are just too 'busy' for my taste, and the choice of fonts is awful in my opinion and would look more at home on a children's book. Didn't they do a quarter leather-bound set in green before without all the fonts? Or was that an older Folio Society edition? That's the one I'm looking for.
No, they have always been the same mess. Nicely made books, but they sorely need an update -- especially the Hobbit, which has green illustrations and lots of 1970s interior styling. It really is horrid (I have one).

Not that I know of. You might be thinking of the HarperCollins 1992 deluxe illustrated box set?

I don't own any EP Tolkien books personally but the sentiment in the last two posts seems to be common (well made, but ugly).

I could handle the Hobbit with all the dwarf runes, but there's absolutely no logic behind including all these runes in the Lord of the Rings and no justification for the runes on the Silmarillion cover.
I believe it was Mr. Underhill that also made mention of this in a TCG video about Easton Press.
I won't plan to buy any EP offerings new, but I also wouldn't be able to resist if I found them at a decent condition and price!
Apparently Giuseppe Pezzini's new book Tolkien and the Mystery of Literary Creation is now available in a signed, limited edition from Easton Press (375 hand-numbered copies).

Appears to be a handsome binding.
I have read a bit of this book and found it to be quite a dense read. Pezzini has clearly done his homework, laboring through much of the secondary criticism of Tolkien and most of this book is about stuff other critics have previously worked at. What Pezzini brings is depth, or density. I found his style quite dry for the most part.

I have never quite fallen in love with Easton Press books. The quality seems to be there, but they just appear a bit odd and of course expensive. I am, however, a little bit interested in the secondary litterature they offer, especially signed limited editions. Thank you for sharing these links. Lots of food for thought.
New from Easton Press: the expanded edition of Smith of Wootton Major.
Given they've also done Adventures of Tom Bombadil, I wonder if this means we will see Roverandom and Farmer Giles at some point soon?
