Poster from the film’s initial release, which came to me from a friend of a friend who used to operate a local movie theater in the 70’s and 80’s. And a promotional large photo from the film depicting The Fellowship.

I actually remember that issue at the newsstands. Not only for LOTR but also because of the Cylon on the cover 😀

So these are 2 different versions of the classic War of the Ring Board Game by SPI, with movie branding. The first one is the UK version and the second US. The game is not based on the movie and did not originally have movie branding, these versions were just produced to promote/cash in on the movie. There is also a Moves Magazine with the movie version on the cover.

I used to have the original SPI game. From what I can tell, they did not change any of the playing pieces, boards to match the movie characters, scenes, etc….correct?

Yes, all inside the box is the same, only the box images different. I loved this game when it came out, it helped cement my love for Tolkien collecting.

Indeed, same here. Although I grew up in such a small town it was hard for me to find anyone who wanted to play it.

Here is a large format booklet (12 pages) that focuses on the UK marketing/advertising campaign for the 1978 release of the Bakshi Lord of the Rings animated movie.

It is interesting to see the initial items available for sale at the release, the selection of pre-formatted print ads, and what theater owners could order to have in their lobbies for patrons to purchase.

Here are 5 jigsaw puzzles from the movie. These are produced by Whitman. They do not consist of many pieces, just 221 pieces each. There is 1 other jigsaw in the set, which I don’t have.
