Wrapped 1960’s Ballantine LOTR Box Sets

I’ve been keeping a watch on listings and postings of US 1960’s Ballantine mass market LOTR box sets for a while: the green (1965), the white (1966), and the purple/red (1967). And I have never seen any of those with a plastic wrapper.

Now come the 70’s and the release of newer mass market box sets, I have seen and do have some with a clear plastic wrapper (which appear to be original)…the red (1973) and the gold (1975).

So I was wondering if anyone has any insight as to whether the 60’s sets were issued with wrappers or not? And if anyone has images of those wrapped sets if they existed.

Just poking more out of curiosity than anything else…

Like you have a couple of 70's sets with Plastic Wrap.

Don't have and (so far) have not seen any 60's set with Plastic Wrap.

Not sure about the 1970 LOTR Set with Slipcase with the Map of Middle Earth - Can't remember for sure if I have seen one in Plastic Wrap.

Ha! But who knows after 50+ years of being wrapped up the condition of the books…

Last week, I took the shrinkwrap off a 1979 Set of books.

All perfect. As new. But I suppose it would depend on how they were stored.

That’s awesome. But, yes a lot depends on how the books are stored. I had a couple wrapped US 1977 Silmarillions that I personally bought in September 1977 and stored over years. Finally decided to unwrap one on the 40th anniversary in 2017 and wouldn’t you know…it had what looked like old mold spots. So disappointing.

In Germany this method of wrapping books came definitely later than 1970. I was told by a former employee of Klett Cotta, who sold a 1st/1st of Herr der Ringe from 69/70 to me, that these books were only wrapped by one sheet of paper each.
