Tbh, no one is really cutting signatures off letters to stick in books at this point. They are all historical abuses (there are legitimate dealers in the Tolkien space that used to routinely do this 20 years ago). I'd imagine most contemporary examples are just fakes.

At the end of the day, these days an actual letter is worth more than a cut signature, as the letter is likely to able to be authenticated, but a cut signature is essentially worthless trash (the market just hadn't quite realised that yet).
