Tolkien Activities 1993 - The United Kingdom

Organization: The Cambridge Tolkien Society (Steve Linley).

Activities: Fortnightly meetings during full term.

Publication: Anor [English, unsure if any issues were produced in 1993]. Subscription cost is £3 (UK), £3 (surface world), £4 (airmail world).

Organization: The Oxford Tolkien Society (Robert Bielby, c/o Christ Church College, Oxford, England).

Publication: Miruvor [English, thrice yearly]. Subscription cost is £4.

Organization: Tol Nimfalas fief, see Forodrim Stockholms Tolkiensällskap under SWEDEN.

Organization: The Tolkien Society (Membership Secretary, Alan Reynolds).

Activities: The Annual General Meeting and Dinner was held on 24 April, in Nottingham, England. The annual Tolkien Society Seminar was held on 26 June in Hexham, England. The theme was "Art, Archaeology and Culture" and papers given included "Hadrian's Wall, Avalon and Elvenhome", "Tolkien and Visual Arts", a comparison on hill fortifications in Middle-earth and Roman Britain, "The Archaeological and Historical Influences on Tolkien's World", "Burial Customs", "A New Perspective on Music in Middle-earth", "Stages of British History Reflected in Middle-earth" and part of the thesis "The Poetic Tradition of Breton Lays and Marie de France in J.R.R. Tolkien's Lays of Beleriand". The annual Oxonmoot was held on 17-19 September at the University College, Oxford, England. Functions included were an art show, entertainments, masquerade, reception with Priscilla Tolkien, and visit to Tolkien's grave site.

Publications: Amon Hen [English, bimonthly], Mallorn [English, yearly]. Subscription cost is £15 (UK), £16.50 (surface world except Australia), £17 (Europe air), £20 (US/Canada air), £21 (Australia air).

Sub-organizations ("Smials"):

Aglarond (Debi Haigh-Hutchinson).

Additional information: The smial was not listed as a smial in 1994.

Arnor (Charmaine De-Bell).

Activities: Smialmoots held at organiser's home.

Armari (Ian Collier).

Activities: Irregular meetings at members' houses or at a pub/restaurant. Held meal at Mongolia Barbecue in honour of J.R.R.T.'s birthday. Also held "Downfallmoot" in Mararge at present.

Bywater Post Office and General Store (Malcolm Lindley)

Activities: Unofficial (and much better) name used to describe activities of the Tolkien Society's sales officer also, however, a smial in its own right, that has irregular meetings with other smials, & a little creative writing, reviews, and artwork. It also administers sale of Nigglings. Dor-en-Ernil (Andrew A.P. Butler).

Publication: Tirith Aear [English, irregular, no issues published in 1993].

Other information: The smial disbanded in 1994.

Endore Dirnen (James Wright).

Eryn-A-Bereth Smial (Les & Joy Toombs).

Activities: Monthly meetings. General discussion meetings were held on 14 January and 11 March.

Additional information: The smial disbanded in March 1994.

Publication: Untitled newsletter [English, irregular].

Fornost Erain (Lyn Ritchie).

Activities: Monthly meetings usually in Edinburgh, Scotland. Visitors are welcome and members of the smial will meet other fans if they visit the area.

Henneth Annun (Gerhard Menzl).

Additional information: The smial was not listed as a smial in 1994.

House of Durin (Peter Bolton -or- Gwyneth Morgan).

Publication: The Book of Mazarbul [English, irregular, none published in 1993].

Additional information: The smial was not listed as a smial in 1994; however Peter Bolton has two new smials called Amon Sul and Northern Wastes.

Khand (Alex Lewis).

Publications: Salman's Smiallings [English, irregular]. Subscription cost is unknown.

Michel Delving (Marc Read).

Publication: The Michel Delving Mail [English, irregular, unsure if any were published in 1993].

Additional information: The smial was not listed as a smial in 1994.

Mithlondrim (Yvonne Cotterill).

Publication: Arador [English, irregular, unsure if any were published in 1993].

Additional information: The smial was not listed as a smial in 1994.

Mundeli Serneiva (Christine Davidson).

Activities: Monthly meetings at members' houses or 'The Grebe' pub in Great Holm, Milton Keynes, England.

Publication: Mundo [English, irregular]. Available to members of the smial.

Northfarthing (Jeremy Morgan)

Activities: Monthly pubmoots held on the first Saturday at 6 p.m. in the Bricklayer's Arms, London, England.

Publication: The Farthing [English, irregular, not known if any were published in 1993].

Rivendell (contact person unknown).

Additional information: The smial was not listed as a smial in 1995.

Taruithorn (Robert Lielby). [Also known as the Oxford Tolkien Society - see above.]

Umbar (Peter Bolton).

Activities: Quarterly meetings at various locations. The main thrust of the smial is to project information about the History of Númenorë and the "colonies" in Middle-earth, by means of stories and "learned articles" by the Faculty Heads of the University of Umbar.

Additional information: The smial was not listed as a smial in 1994; however Peter Bolton has two new smials called Amon Sul and Northern Wastes.

Wanderers of Rhudaur (Richard Crawshaw).

Activities: Role playing within the scope of Tolkien's Middle-earth.

Wellinghall (Andrew Wells)

Activities: Occasional meetings at members' houses.

Woodspring (Michael Bell).

Publication: Dragon's Breath [English, irregular, unsure if any were published in 1993].

Additional information: The smial was not listed as a smial in 1994.

Sub-organizations ("Special interest groups"):

J.R.R. Tolkien Collecting and Bibliography Special Interest Group (Christina Scull).

The Linguistic Fellowship of the Tolkien Society (Julian Bradfield).

Publication: Quettar [English, irregular]. Subscription cost is £3.75 (UK), £4.50 (Europe air/surface world), £6 (world air).

Nigglings - The Creative Writers Special Interest Group (Alex Lewis).

Activities: The special interest group's main aim is to publish tales, artwork and poetry from the pens and nibs of a variety of Tolkien Society members in the group's publication, Nigglings. Other special issues are issued which contain longer tales and artwork. The group meets and reads aloud fiction unpublished by members and information on how to write fiction--usually at Oxonmoot and whenever meetings can be arranged.

Publications: Nigglings [English, biannually]. Cost (each) is £2.50 (UK), £3.50 (Europe air/world surface), £4.50 (world air), or a subscription of two issues for £4.75 (UK), £6.50 (Europe air/world surface), £8.00 (world air). Nigglings Special Publications are each available for £2.50 (UK), £3.50 (Europe air/world surface), £4.50 (world air). All monies should be sent to Malcolm Lindley in sterling checks payable to Alex Lewis.

Tolkien Biographical Special Interest Group (Pat Reynolds).

Activities: This group is intended as a special interest group for members interested in researching Tolkien's life. It was founded in April at the Tolkien Society's Annual General Meeting in Nottingham, England.

Independent Publication: Mathom Extra [English, irregular]. (Jason Finch). Subscription cost is unknown. The publication is used for news among the smials of the Tolkien Society.

Independent Publication: Scandal!!! [English, irregular].
