Tolkien sends his condolences to the wife of E.V. Gordon, who had recently died due to complications from an operation.Hand written in ink, signed "Ronald Tolkien", 1 leaf.[1]

Wayne Hammond and Christina Scull note for '29 July 1938' that E.V. Gordon had died and Tolkien "begins to help in the setting of Gordon's affairs". He will complete the setting of examination papers for the New Zealand examinations and he will help revise Gordon's edition of Pearl.Chronology, p. 233[2]
