Christopher Wiseman had written to Tolkien on 1 March 1916see Letter from Christopher Wiseman to J.R.R. Tolkien • 1 March 1916 (#1320)[1] saying that Tolkien liked "little, delicate, beautiful creations" but Wiseman was "more thrilled by enormous, slow-moving, omnipotent things".
Here Tolkien replies that he is trying to express his love of God's creations, such as wind, trees and flowers. His elves, as creations also express this love. They are showing a truth about the natural world that science cannot, and "the Eldar, the Solosimpe, the Noldoli [different kindreds of Elves in his mythology] are better, warmer, fairer to the heart than the mathematics of the tide, or the vortices that are the winds …".
