In his letter of late November,Carpenter #298a: Letter from J.R.R. Tolkien to Clyde S. Kilby • ca. 3 December 1967 (#903)[1] Tolkien says that he had begun a letter "some time ago", but this had never been finished and remained unsent. Tolkien included this with that letter. He mentions a visit from Charles Huttar, and sends his apologies that he had not contributed to the 'Festschrift' dedicated to Kilby.

He says that his work has not proceeded very far due to Edith's health, family matters and by business.

The letter is held at the 'Marion E. Wade Center, Wheaton College, Wheaton, Illinois'.
