Smith thanks Tolkien for his letter,Hammond/Scull note that Tolkien likely wrote to Smith before he had received the letter enclosing Wiseman's letter to Smith. We do not currently have a date for this letter. See Letter from J.R.R. Tolkien to G.B. Smith • c. 1 August 1916 (#1549)[1] he thinks that "there are still a great many sober men and true..."
